RACHAEL CARSON
Why Admirari? The idea of being able to recognise and enjoy the sense of wonder incorporates a couple of the core values of Admirari.
Firstly, emotional intelligence is at the heart of much of the work we do.
Secondly, being able to quietly observe, and thereby experience nature, is a lost art that is worth pursing in this relentlessly overstimulating world we live in.
After completing both my teaching and counselling qualifications many years ago, I quickly learned that I didn’t quite have what it took to be a teacher (huge cudos to all of you who are!). I wanted to journey alongside students outside the classroom rather than within it and this led me to take on a role as youth worker in a high school for several years before I left to start a family.
Once it was time to re-enter the workforce, I knew that the landscape of schools had changed and so had I as a person. I went on a stillness retreat and it was at this time that I was able to experience nature therapy for myself. I understood, possibly for the first real time, how time in nature is healing, can provide clarity, and gives our minds and body the space to learn and grow.
This retreat inspired a move into horticulture, and I have since been working in this field alongside my therapy work. I also have a passion for productive spaces and the benefits to people and the environment that they have. I particularly love Australian native plants and continuing the path of education for us as a country on how to enjoy them more.
Working in diverse roles has allowed me to work with a wide range of people from a range of backgrounds, and I have seen the same healing power in nature for all of them. Whether they are carrying stress about work, being bullied by a classmate, or grieving a loss, I have seen a change in them after they've spent time in nature. And I have seen the difference most of all in me.
The desire to give people the skills they need to help through the more challenging seasons of their life is always on my mind. The desire to create a safe space for people to let go of all they've been holding on to spurs me forward. The desire to see people healed and whole and embracing life inspired me to start Admirari.
It is important to me that the experiences I provide are based on sound therapeutic modelling and scientific and evidence based information and experiences. I will always be learning - from others, from myself, from nature - and this creates the foundation that Admirari builds from.
I believe the skills and experiences incorporated into nature therapy are life skills that can help people, regardless of lifestage. Equipping people, giving them a toolkit to help themselves navigate through the challenges and joys of life, is one of Admirari’s core values.
